There, standing in an alley,  Shteyt zikh dort in gesele
A little house, quiet and thoughtful.  Shtil fartrakht a hayzele,
Inside in the attic,  Drinen oyfn boydem-shtibl
Lives my dear Reyzele.  Voynt mayn tayer Reyzele.
Every evening in front of the little house,  Yedn ovnt farn hayzl
I wander around.  Drey ikh zikh arum,
I whistle and call out, “Reizl,  Kh’gib a fayf, un ruf oys: Reyzl,  כ´גיב אַ פֿייַף און רוף אויס רייזל,
Come, Come, Come!”  Kum, kum, kum!

A little window opens,  Efnt zikh a fentsterl,
The old little house awakes,  Vakht oyf s’alte hayzele
And soon in the quiet street rings out  Un bald klingt in shtiln gesl
A sweet voice, it's Reizele speaking:  A zis kol, s’redt Reyzele:
Wait a little while, my dear,  Nokh a vayle vart, mayn liber,
Soon I'll be free.  Bald vel ikh zayn fray.
Walk around a few more times,  Ge zikh nokh a por mol iber¬ —
One, two, three!  Eyns, tsvey, dray!

I'll go for a merry stroll,  Ge ikh mir a frelekher,
Singing and cracking hazelnuts.  Zing un knak mir niselekh,
I hear her trotting down the stairs  Her ikh oyf di treplekh shpringen
With her slender legs,  Ire drobne fiselekh,
And soon, at the last step,  Shoyn arop fun letstn trepl,
I gently take her in my arms,  Kh’nem zi lib arum,
I quietly give her a kiss on the head  Kh’gib ir shtil a kush in kepl -¬
Come, come, come!  Kum, kum, kum!

I want to ask you, David,  — Kh’vil dikh betn, Dovidl,
Don't whistle anymore!  Zolst aroyf nisht fayfn mer!
Listen, he's whistling again, says mother.  — Herst, er fayft shoyn — zogt di mame,
She is pious, it bothers her very much.  Zi iz frum, s’fardrist zi zeer,
“Whistling,” she says, "is not Jewish,  Fayfn, zogt zi, iz nisht yidish,  פֿייַפֿן, זאָגט זי, איז נישט ייִדיש,
it only suits them."
Simply give a sign in Yiddish:  Gib a tsekhn prost oyf yidish —
One, two, three!  Eyns, tsvey, dray!

From today I won't whistle anymore,  — Kh’vel fun haynt nisht fayfn mer,
On that I swear.  D’royf gib ikh a shvuele —
To please you I will even  Dir tsulib vel ikh afile
Become pious, my modest one.  Vern frum, mayn tsnuele,
I'll be, whenever you want, Reizl,  Kh’vel zayn, ven du vilst nor, Reyzl,
As pious as your mother.  Vi dayn mame frum,
Going every Sabbath to the synagogue.  Yedn shabes geyn in klayzl –
Come, come, come!  Kum, kum, kum!

I believe you, my darling.  — Kh’gleyb es dir, mayn libinker,
And for that, for you, David,  Un derfar dir, Dovidl,
I'm knitting a nice phylacteries bag  Shtrik ikh a sheyn tfiln-zekl,
With a Star of David.  Mit a mogn-dovidl,
When they ‘ll admire it in the shul,  Ven gefeln s’vet in klayzl,
You ‘ll tell them:  Zogn zolstu zey:
“My dear Reyzl knitted it.”  S’hot geshtrikt mayn libe Reyzl,
One, two, three!  Eyns, tsvey, dray!

Thank you for your present,  — Kh’dank far dayn matonele,
I love you so much, Reyzele,  Kh’lib azoy dikh, Reyzele!
I love your mother, I love the street,  Kh’lib dayn mamen, kh’lib dos gesl,

With her slender legs,  Ire drobne fiselekh —
