At another's table, or at home?  Bay yenem tsi bay zikh aleyn in shtub?  בײַ יענעם צי בײַ זיך אַליין אין שטוב?
It's pareve, neither milk nor meat,  Si'z pareve, nit milkhik un nit fleyshik,  ס'איז פּאַרעווע, ניט מילכיק און ניט פֿליישיק,
Only a meal that every Jew likes.  Nor a maykhl vos a yeder Yid hot lib.  נאָר אַ מאכל וואָס אַ יעדער ייִד האָט ליב.
Tell me, what is the ambition of every woman?  Zogt vos iz a yeder froys ambitsye?  זאָגט וואָס איז אַ יעדער פֿרויס אַמביציע?
We love it, and we know just why,  Me hot es lib, me veyst take far vos,  מע האָט עס ליב, מע ווייסט טאַקע פֿאַר וואָס,
It's a traditional jewish meal,  S'iz a yidish maykhl mit traditsye  ס'איז אַ ייִדיש מאכל מיט טראַדיציע,
And we eat it every Friday night:  Un yedn erev-shabes est men dos:  און יעדן ערבֿ־שבת עסט מען דאָס:

It's a thousand-flavor meal  S'iz a maykhl vos hot toyznt tamen,  ס'איז אַ מאכל וואָס האָט טויזנט טעמען,
First tasted at my mother's knee,  Kh'hob tsu ersht farzukht es bay mayn mamen.  כ'האָב צו ערשט פֿאַרזוכט עס בײַ מײַן מאַמען.
It's precious, it’s so good,  Iz es tayer, iz es voyl,  איז עס טײַער, איז עס װױל,
A meal for the people of Israel,  A maykhl far dem folk Yisroel!  אַ מאכל פֿאַר דעם פֿאָלק ישראל!
As you eat, it melts right in your mouth.  Esndik tsegeyt es zikh in moyl.  עסנדיק צעגייט עס זיך אין מויל.
The gefilte fish themselves are jewish.  Oy, di gefilte fish zey zenen yidish:  אוי, די געפֿילטע פֿיש זיי זענען ייִדיש:
We come from synagogue, we make the kiddush,  Me kumt fun shul un shtelt zikh makhn kidesh,  מע קומט פֿון שול און שטעלט זיך מאַכן קידוש,
At home it's lovely, clean and fresh,  In shtub iz sheyn un reyn un frish,  אין שטוב איז שיין און ריין און פֿריש,
We sit down at a covered table  Me zetst zikh tsum gedektn tish  מע זעצט זיך צום געדעקטן טיש
And we are served gefilte fish.  Un me derlangt gefilte fish.  און מע דערלאַנגט געפֿילטע פֿיש.

Hungarians love goulash with paprika,  Der Unger hot lib gulyash mit paprike,  דער אונגער האָט ליב גוליאַש מיט פּאַפּריקע,
Poles love meat stew with bread,  Der Polak hot lib bigos fleysh mit broyt,  דער פּאָליאַק האָט ליב ביגאָס פֿלייש מיט ברויט,
Among Russians, red borsht is the main dish,  Bay dem Rus iz royter borsht der iker,  בײַ דעם רוס איז רויטער באָרשט דער עיקר,
And Germans would rather have cabbage dumplings.  Un der Yeke hot lib klise mit kroyt.  און דער יעקע האָט ליב קליסע מיט קרויט.
Mamaliga is favored by Rumanians,  A mamelige glaykhn di Rumener  אַ מאַמעליגע גלײַכן די רומענער,
And Georgians just love their shashlik.  Un der Gruziner hot lib a shashlik,  און דער גרוזינער האָט ליב אַ שאַשליק.
None of these folks know what's really good,  Nor vos gut iz veysn zey nit keyner,  נאָר וואָס גוט איז ווייסן זיי ניט קיינער,
On the contrary, tell me what's really good?  Un adrabe zogt mir vos iz gut?  און פֿאַדרבא ייִדן, זאָגט מיר וואָס איז גוט?
