Border Guard |
Mishmar hagvul |
משמר הגבול | |||||||
| |||||||||
| |||||||||
The village sleeps, mountains watch from afar | Ha-kfar yashén, harim tsofim mi-nègèd |
And the olive grove glistens secretly | Ve-khèrèm ha-zétim makhsif sodot. |
The howl of the jackal echoes in the silence | Yelél ha-tan `olè be-héd ha-shèqèt |
And in the field, the ears of corn dream | U-va-sade ha-shibolim ẖolmot. |
The children sleep in the quiet house | Ha-taf yashén ba-bayit ha-rogéa` |
For guards are watching over their dreams. | Ki mishmarot hutsvu `al ẖalomo. |
The cypress tree sways above | Ha-brosh mé`al nogéa` lo nogéa` |
As if praying for the house and its peace. | Ki-mefalél `al bayit u-shlomo. |
At night, at night, when the whole village is asleep, | Ba-layla, ba-layla, be-num kol ha-kfar, |
We stand watch. | ’Anaẖnu `omdim ba-mishmar. |
Over the garden and the fruit, over the sheep and the machinery, | `Al gan ve`al pèri, `al tson u-mekhona |
The chain of guards stands ready. | Hulyat ha-shomrim nekhona. | |
And when the time comes and the eagle rises | Ve-khi tavo sha`a ve-ya`al `ayit |
And the enemy's hand strikes what is dear to us | Ve-yad oyév ’èl ha-yaqar tushat |
We will be a wall on the wall of the house | Homa ’anaẖnu `al ẖomat ha-bayit |
And everything that touches it will perish. | Ve-khol ’asher yiga bah ve-yovad. |
Everything is asleep: in the sheaves – the flour | Ha-kol yashén: ba-shibolim – ha-qèmaẖ |
In the branches, the fruit ripens slowly | Be-`anafim ha-peri ba-la’at mavshil |
We, who sowed here with tears | ’Anaẖnu, shè-zar`anu kan bi-dema, |
Want to reap with joy and gladness! | Rotsim li-qtsor be-rènèn u-ve-gil! | |
At night, at night… | Ba-layla, ba-layla… | |
And if, during the day, we harvest from the field | Ve’im ba-yom min ha-sadè navi’a | וְאִם בַּיּוֹם מִן הַשָּׂדֶה נָבִיאָה |
The blessing of a bountiful harvest for the barn, | Birkat tenuva le-’osèm ve-’ambar |
Here, at night, darkness falls, | Hiné, ba-léyl, `ét ẖashékha tagiaẖ |
And armed we go out to stand guard. | Ve-ẖamushim nétsé ’èl ha-mishmar. |
So that fire does not engulf the edges of our field, | Leval ha-’ésh toẖaz shulé sadénu, |
For the tree we have grown with pain, | Lema`an `éts gidalnu bi-kh’ev, |
For the smile on our children's faces, | Lema`an naharat pné yeladéynu, |
So that all that has been conceived may flourish! | Lema`an kol shèhèra yelavlév! | |
